Observe and Transform Negative Emotions:The Pain Body and Presence

Eckhart Tolle explains that emotions are energy entities that can control your thoughts and actions when unrecognized. He introduces the concept of the "pain body"—accumulated unprocessed emotions from the past that periodically trigger disproportionate reactions to present events. Without awareness, you become possessed by these emotional patterns; with awareness, you create space between yourself and the emotion. Through observation and anchoring in the present moment, you can prevent emotions from hijacking your thinking and feeding into negative thought loops. Tolle emphasizes that fostering awareness, especially in children, is essential for emotional freedom and a more conscious society.

What is an emotion and how does it control you?

An emotion is not merely a fleeting feeling—it is an energy entity, a form of energy that lives within you. While invisible, you can observe its effects in the external world: in your words, your actions, your posture, your facial expression. When an emotion arises without recognition or awareness, it takes over completely. It invades the body first, then rises into the mind, where it hijacks your thinking. This is the critical moment: once emotion captures the mind, every thought begins to reflect the emotional state you're in. The emotion does not simply feel; it thinks through you.

Tolle identifies a vicious cycle that forms instantly: the emotion generates thoughts that match its frequency, and those thoughts amplify the emotion further. In anger, for example, the more you think about what made you angry, the angrier you become. The thought feeds the emotion; the emotion generates more thought; the loop tightens until you are completely lost in it—often resulting in words or actions you regret. For children, this mechanism is even more volatile. A child without the ability to recognize emotions is entirely at their mercy. An emotional influx takes them over completely, controlling what they say, do, and think. Some children, having learned that violent emotion is the only way to get parental attention, unconsciously exploit this mechanism to obtain recognition.

What is the pain body and how does it operate?

The pain body is an accumulation of old, unrecognized, and unprocessed negative emotions. These emotions originate in early childhood and other traumatic or difficult periods, but they do not disappear; they dwell in the body as an unobserved entity. You can think of the pain body almost as a separate being living within you. For extended periods, it may be dormant, but it cannot remain dormant forever. Periodically, it rises up into your conscious mind and takes you over.

A reliable indicator that the pain body has awakened is a reaction disproportionate to the triggering event. If someone makes a small critical comment and you respond with fury or deep hurt, the trigger itself did not warrant such intensity—but the old, latent emotion stored in your pain body did. In that moment, you are no longer yourself; you are the pain body. You are the old emotion acting through you. In relationships, this can be jarring: a partner may suddenly find themselves facing a version of you that seems like "some weird, awful jerk," unaware that your pain body has been activated.

The pain body feeds on negative thinking because thought is energy, and every negative thought amplifies the emotional entity. But it also does something more cunning: it attempts to activate the same emotion in others. When activated, the pain body will speak through you—unconsciously, automatically—saying something negative or provocative designed to trigger a similar emotional state in your partner, family member, or colleague. This is how relationship dramas intensify: two pain bodies resonating with each other, feeding each other, neither person conscious of what is actually happening.

How does negative thinking about your life reinforce emotional loops?

What you call "your life" is not a collection of actual events; it is a narrative—a repetitive sequence of thoughts in your mind. For many people, this narrative is deeply unhappy. Whenever they begin thinking about their life, they slide further into unhappiness. Yet they compulsively return to this thought pattern. Tolle calls this the "addiction to unhappiness," and it is genuinely addictive in nature.

The mechanism is simple: the emotion wants to be fed by thoughts that resonate with its vibrational frequency. A negative emotion will never be satisfied by positive thoughts like "What a beautiful sky" or "My life is wonderful." Those thoughts do not feed it. But "My life is terrible," "Everyone disappoints me," "The world is awful"—these thoughts are the emotional equivalent of fuel. The pain body craves them because they sustain its existence. This is why, even when someone is miserable, they often cannot stop thinking about what makes them miserable. They are feeding the beast without realizing it.

What happens when the pain body dominates unchecked?

Without awareness, you are entirely at the mercy of your emotional fields. The unobserved mind—the mind without conscious awareness of what is happening—gets taken over by toxic thoughts and emotions that may originate in the distant past. A relationship drama might rage for hours or an entire day, with both people completely identified with their emotions, each one's pain body activated and resonating with the other's. Then, as mysteriously as it began, the intensity subsides. The next day, you wake somewhat more conscious, the emotion has receded, and you cannot even remember what the drama was about or how it started. The truth is: how it started doesn't matter. The pain body needed that drama. It wanted it. The triggering event was merely the excuse.

This is what it means to be unconscious: to be at the mercy of these accumulated emotional patterns, to live as if possessed by them, to believe you are your emotions rather than the aware presence that can observe them.

How does awareness break the emotional possession?

The moment awareness enters, everything shifts. The emotion may still be present in your body and mind, but you are no longer totally possessed by it or trapped in it. There is now an observing presence, a witness to what is happening. This is an enormous step forward. It is the difference between being the storm and standing in the shelter watching the storm pass.

When you notice a negative emotion arising and catch yourself slipping into a negative narrative about your life, pause and recognize what is actually occurring: there is a strong energy in you—emotional and mental energy combined—that has taken charge of your mind. In that moment, become the observer. Notice: "I have been thinking bad things about my life for the past while. But is it really that bad? I'm sitting here, breathing, looking at the plant, feeling the aliveness in my body." By shifting into observation, you begin to step out of your own narrative and into the present moment. This is not a dismissal of the emotion—the feeling is still there—but you are no longer identified with it.

Why is the present moment inseparable from freedom?

The present moment is the only place where there is freedom from the past and from a mind conditioned by past experience. The pain body is always rooted in the past; it is historical. Presence—awareness in this moment—is the antidote. The power of the present moment arises the moment you become aware, the moment you become an observer of your inner states. You are no longer at the mercy of your conditioning.

Tolle offers a practical method: when a negative emotion is present, feel it in the body. Anxiety, for instance, typically manifests as tightness or agitation in the hands, feet, chest, or stomach. Instead of fighting the emotion or feeding it with thought, allow it to be there in that moment. You feel the sensation fully, without resistance. Paradoxically, because you are aware—because you are not trying to escape it or think about it—the emotion does not have the fuel it needs. The anxiety may still be physically present, but it does not rise up into your mind to generate more anxious thoughts. You have broken the loop.

How can awareness be fostered, especially in children?

Tolle emphasizes that children should learn, as a vital curriculum at school, how to recognize their emotions. Without this skill, emotions take over completely. One practical approach is to make the emotion an object of observation and even play. A parent or teacher might ask: "What are you feeling right now? Can you paint it? What color is it? If it had a name, what would you call it?" By turning the emotion into something that can be observed, named, and even creatively expressed, the child begins to develop a relationship with the emotion that is not one of total identification. The child learns that feelings arise, but they are not the totality of who the child is.

Fostering consciousness and awareness in children is, Tolle suggests, one of the most important gifts an enlightened civilization could offer. Most education focuses on information and intellectual skills, but it largely ignores the inner dimension—the capacity to observe one's own mind and emotional states. This is a profound gap.

What role does media and collective consciousness play?

In the modern world, much of the media—news, social platforms, entertainment—operates at a toxic and deeply unconscious level. It amplifies fear, outrage, and negative narratives because these emotions generate engagement and attention. The collective mind absorbs these patterns daily through screens, social media, and constant communication. When people repeatedly tell each other how dreadful the situation is, they are collectively feeding the pain body of society. Tolle notes that this is "normal" but not inevitable. At a minimum, one needs awareness of what is actually happening: that you are consuming emotional toxicity, often unconsciously, and it is shaping your inner state.

The antidote is not to pretend negative events don't exist, but to consume information with awareness. Notice when you are being triggered, when you are sliding into collective fear narratives, when you are identifying with the catastrophe being broadcast. Recognize it for what it is: emotion. Not truth. Not fact. Emotion being transmitted and amplified through systems designed to capture your attention.

Where to go from here

The practice Tolle offers is deceptively simple but profoundly transformative: become aware. Notice when you are being possessed by emotion or trapped in negative thought narratives. Shift into observation. Feel the emotion in your body without feeding it with thought. Anchor yourself in the present moment—your breath, the sensations around you, the aliveness of this moment—where the past has no power and the pain body cannot touch you. Foster this awareness in yourself and in the children around you. The world does not need more information; it needs more consciousness. It needs people who can observe their emotions rather than be run by them, who can see through collective narratives of fear and despair, and who can act from presence rather than from the possession of accumulated pain.

[0:00] (gentle music)

[0:06] - And to gain something vital that children should learn

[0:09] at school,

[0:11] is how to recognize their emotions.

[0:17] Because children have very strong emotions.

[0:20] And, without the ability to recognize your emotions,

[0:26] the emotions take you over completely.

[0:31] What that means is, the emotions

[0:34] when emotional influx comes,

[0:38] it takes you over, it controls what you say,

[0:41] it controls what you do, it controls what you think,

[0:45] when the emotion is in charge of you.

[0:47] And what is an emotion?

[0:50] And again, like a thought, is an energy entity,

[0:55] an emotion too, is an entity that is an energy form.

[0:59] You cannot see it,

[1:01] but you can only see how it manifests in the external world.

[1:07] But an emotion is an energy form that lives in you,

[1:10] it's a (indistinct) entity. (chuckles)

[1:14] And if you recognize it, then there's an awareness there.

[1:22] Without awareness, often you can easily

[1:26] be run by your emotions.

[1:29] And that means the emotion, whether it be

[1:32] let's say it could be anger,

[1:36] it could be sadness, could be anxiety, whatever it may be.

[1:47] Deep regret, jealousy, envy, whatever it is,

[1:53] the emotion,

[1:57] this energy, invades

[2:02] which at first you might feel in the body,

[2:06] it then rises up into your mind,

[2:08] and then it controls your thinking.

[2:13] So when you feel deeply negative then,

[2:17] or angry,

[2:20] then the emotion rides into your mind

[2:22] and every thought reflects the emotion that you feel,

[2:27] because the emotion is thinking through you. (laughs)

[2:30] And the emotion is feeding on your thoughts.

[2:33] So the loop happens, the vicious circle,

[2:37] the emotion creates thoughts,

[2:39] and the thought amplifies the emotion.

[2:43] So in the case of anger, you get more and more angry.

[2:47] The more you think about it,

[2:48] the more angry you get. (laughs)

[2:51] Until finally you lash out,

[2:55] completely lost.

[2:57] And of course, if it's a child also experiences that,

[3:03] sometimes very (indistinct) children have temper tantrums

[3:06] and, or the, may other, very violent emotions.

[3:14] Some children have learned

[3:15] that the only way they can get attention

[3:17] from their parents is by displaying violent emotions,

[3:22] because otherwise parents don't give

[3:24] them attention. (laughs)

[3:27] So a child would say,

[3:34] as you know,

[3:35] if you're probably aware of the term I use pain body.

[3:39] Pain body is a term I use

[3:41] for an accumulation of old emotion,

[3:45] that's still lives in you.

[3:48] It's unrecognized as emotion,

[3:50] it lives in you as an entity.

[3:52] It's an accumulation of negative emotion

[3:56] often goes back to early childhood,

[4:00] and the accumulation of negative emotion

[4:02] that hasn't left you,

[4:04] that dwells in your body somewhere,

[4:07] and I call it the pain body.

[4:09] And I, it's helpful to look at it as a little entity almost,

[4:13] an entity that lives in your (indistinct), lives in you.

[4:18] And sometimes it's dormant for periods of time,

[4:21] but it cannot stay dormant forever,

[4:24] it has to occasionally rise up into your mind.

[4:29] And then suddenly, you get taken over by this old emotion.

[4:33] Sometimes it's triggered by an event,

[4:36] and you do usually know it's the pain body,

[4:39] when the reaction to a triggering event is out of proportion

[4:45] to the triggering event.

[4:47] The erection is far greater

[4:49] than would be warranted by the triggering event.

[4:52] And that usually means

[4:54] it has triggered old latent emotion in you.

[4:57] The pain body, it's come to life,

[5:00] then it takes over your mind,

[5:02] and you are no longer you then,

[5:04] you are the pain body.

[5:05] You are the old emotion that lives through you.

[5:10] If you have a partner, the partner,

[5:12] if the partner doesn't know you well yet,

[5:15] you only just moved in together or got married,

[5:21] and then the partner is suddenly surprised

[5:23] that you are no longer you.

[5:26] You are some weird, awful jerk,

[5:29] that's, what is this?

[5:34] You may not know it's the pain body,

[5:36] because you just think you made a terrible mistake,

[5:42] but your partner's pain body may awaken yours.

[5:46] And then you have a one awful drama that,

[5:50] and the pain body loves not only negative thinking,

[5:54] because every negative thought feeds it, thought is energy.

[5:58] It feeds emotion,

[6:00] and the emotion gets even stronger,

[6:03] then you have another thought and feeds,

[6:06] this is the loop.

[6:07] And so if you (indistinct)

[6:09] it is also, when you feel very bad about your life,

[6:14] you're very unhappy about your life,

[6:16] what you call your life,

[6:19] is a narrative.

[6:20] What you call your life is a narrative.

[6:23] It's a sequence of thoughts

[6:26] in your mind that are repetitive, or repetitive sequence

[6:30] of thoughts is what you call your life.

[6:33] And, for many people,

[6:36] this thing that I call my life is a huge burdensome,

[6:44] dreadful thing that they carry around.

[6:46] That is a very unhappy thing.

[6:49] My life.

[6:52] Whenever I start thinking about my life,

[6:54] I get more and more unhappy.

[6:57] I'm not talking about me.

[6:59] I'm just, whenever I think about my life,

[7:03] I get more and more unhappy.

[7:06] And the more unhappy I get,

[7:11] the more I want to think about it.

[7:14] It's, I call it, it's what arises here,

[7:20] is the addiction to unhappiness.

[7:24] It's actually addictive.

[7:27] Why is it addictive?

[7:29] Because the emotion, wants more of it.

[7:34] It's more of itself.

[7:36] It wants to be fed

[7:38] by the thinking that reflects the same energy

[7:44] with its vibrational frequency, so to speak of the emotion.

[7:48] So every negative thought feeds the negative emotion.

[7:51] A positive thought cannot feed the negative emotion.

[7:55] A thought that,

[7:56] "Oh, what a beautiful sky.

[7:59] Isn't it?"

[8:01] This gives the, the emotion doesn't want that.

[8:03] That doesn't feed it.

[8:05] Or, "My life is so wonderful."

[8:07] No, it's not. (laughs)

[8:10] The emotion loves the thoughts,

[8:12] but it's not only the thoughts,

[8:13] what it loves even more,

[8:16] is to get the same emotion from others.

[8:20] And this is how the pain body operates.

[8:22] It then goes to whoever is around you at the time,

[8:25] your partner, or at work, or family member,

[8:30] and the emotion will then speak

[8:32] through you and say something negative,

[8:35] in order to provoke a similar emotion

[8:38] in the other person.

[8:40] It's all unconscious.

[8:41] It's crazy, but it's normal. (laughs)

[8:45] And so the, and again, here we have,

[8:48] it's the unobserved mind.

[8:53] Lack of awareness.

[8:55] The unobserved mind gets taken over.

[8:58] It gets taken over by toxic thoughts.

[9:01] It gets taken over by emotions that arise,

[9:06] they could be your old emotions from the past,

[9:11] the pain body, that come up periodically

[9:14] and then subside once

[9:16] you've had a drama in your relationship,

[9:19] lasting for an hour or two, or the whole day,

[9:23] then the pain body subsides.

[9:26] And the next day you wake up,

[9:29] you're a bit more conscious again.

[9:32] And the emotion has subsided.

[9:34] Your mind is not quite as crazy as yesterday.

[9:39] It's still not very, not conscious,

[9:42] but not quite as crazy as yesterday.

[9:45] And you wake up and then,

[9:47] "Oh."

[9:48] You can't even remember what it was all about,

[9:51] the drama that you had, with your, whoever it was,

[9:54] you think,

[9:56] what was, how did it all start?

[9:58] It didn't matter how it started,

[10:00] the pain body needed it, wanted it.

[10:03] So, the, again, lack of awareness,

[10:11] through lack of awareness,

[10:12] you are at the mercy of your emotional fields.

[10:18] So, the moment awareness comes in,

[10:23] the emotion may still be there,

[10:26] but you're no longer totally, possessed by it,

[10:30] or trapped in it.

[10:31] It's still there, but at least

[10:33] there's an observing presence there.

[10:36] And that's an enormous step forward.

[10:39] So whenever you feel emotion arising,

[10:42] that is of a very negative kind,

[10:46] let's come back to, for a moment to,

[10:48] what I said about telling yourself how unhappy you are,

[10:55] or how awful your life is,

[10:59] or how awful other people are,

[11:03] whatever this narrative may be,

[11:06] then recognize that there is a very strong energy in you,

[11:13] emotional, mental energy,

[11:16] (indistinct) they've come together,

[11:20] and suddenly be the observer, say,

[11:26] "Oh for the past, oh, I've been thinking bad things

[11:32] about my life, (chuckles)

[11:35] but is it really that bad?

[11:36] Because I'm sitting here breathing,

[11:41] looking at the plant,

[11:44] and the sky,

[11:47] and feeling the liveliness in the body."

[11:51] You beginning to get out of your own narrative,

[11:56] and into the present moment.

[11:59] The only way, where there's ,

[12:00] the only place where there's freedom from the past,

[12:03] from the conditioned mind,

[12:06] conditioned by the past, is the present moment.

[12:10] So, it's always to become aware,

[12:15] is inseparable from present moment.

[12:19] The power of the present moment arises,

[12:23] the moment you become aware and aware is,

[12:29] you're the observer of your inner states.

[12:34] And then you're no longer at the mercy of your inner states,

[12:41] freedom arises.

[12:43] And so the emotion, for example,

[12:47] cannot renew itself anymore through using your mind,

[12:52] because then you say, "There's, nope, I don't want that."

[12:57] You recognize a dysfunctional way in which

[13:00] the emotion is linking up into your mind.

[13:04] And you come into the present moment,

[13:06] And again, breathing, (inhales)

[13:13] and deep breathing deep into the abdomen a few times,

[13:18] and your attention follows the breaths.

[13:22] That's the important part. (exhales loudly)

[13:26] And then you feel the liveliness that pervades

[13:28] the entire body. (exhales softly)

[13:32] And there may still be an emotion in there,

[13:34] it may not have gone away immediately,

[13:36] there's still, whatever it is, the anxiety, the fear,

[13:40] the heaviness, or the anger.

[13:42] You can still feel it somewhere in you,

[13:46] but you're not consumed by it anymore.

[13:50] It's still there.

[13:52] And not, it's,

[13:55] you can it's, you can live with it,

[13:57] it's not that bad, because you are the awareness.

[14:01] that's around it.

[14:03] And as the, awareness deepens,

[14:09] it begins to, the way I put it,

[14:11] transmute the energy that was trapped in the emotion.

[14:16] It was energy that got trapped in early childhood,

[14:20] right off, (groaning)

[14:24] and through the awareness it gets, (exhales loudly)

[14:27] because the awareness also means

[14:29] that you allow it to be there in this moment.

[14:32] It's not renewing itself in, through your mind,

[14:35] but in this moment, this is what you feel.

[14:39] Awareness allows (indistinct)

[14:42] gives it space, is the space for it.

[14:45] That is, I feel this, can still feel the anxiety,

[14:51] but because you are aware the anxiety does not rise up

[14:54] into your mind and controls your thinking anymore.

[14:57] That's, important difference.

[15:00] And so, you feel it, (exhales slowly)

[15:05] and then it gradually diminishes.

[15:10] It doesn't renew itself anymore.

[15:13] But you allow it while it's there,

[15:15] you say, well, that is,

[15:19] and you may be able to feel other parts

[15:22] of the body that are actually fine.

[15:24] Anxiety might be in your chest area,

[15:28] and, but in, your hands are fine.

[15:32] You feel the (indistinct) in your hands, and your feet,

[15:36] and your arms, and a lot of the rest of your body.

[15:40] You feel that aliveness. (exhales loudly)

[15:46] Let's see how you begin to be free of the pain body,

[15:54] or any, no longer at the mercy of emotional energies.

[16:01] And that, again, children could learn that easily at school,

[16:06] but game playing for example,

[16:09] and, so, parents can teach their children,

[16:14] if children have, bouts of anger, for example,

[16:17] sometimes some children (indistinct) it's not uncommon.

[16:23] This could be already the young,

[16:25] the pain body in the child after it's happened,

[16:30] talk to the child and say,

[16:31] "What was it?

[16:32] What did, what happened yesterday,

[16:34] when you started screaming and throwing things?

[16:38] What was that?

[16:38] What did you feel?

[16:41] What, can you paint it?

[16:43] What would it look like if you make a picture it?

[16:47] What color is it?

[16:48] Does it have a name, that thing that comes

[16:51] into you from time to time and makes you throw things?

[16:55] What, does it have a name?

[16:57] If it had a name, what name would it have?"

[16:59] And by asking these questions,

[17:03] the awareness in the child grows,

[17:05] awareness of it.

[17:08] Could be done as game (indistinct)

[17:10] playing it out in games at school and so on.

[17:14] So that, it's fostering the awareness in children,

[17:20] that's the most important subject in school.

[17:23] The founder, foundational subject at school,

[17:27] of course would be awareness. (chuckles)

[17:29] Well, I mean, is that so difficult

[17:32] to understand.

[17:33] The most, consciousness, is a primordial subject,

[17:37] that underlies all other subjects.

[17:39] It's cool. (chuckles)

[17:44] And then, it's so, that's how it starts.

[17:47] So now we, most of us do as adults.

[17:50] We, but what could have perhaps been done

[17:53] in a more enlightened civilization at school,

[17:57] we do it as a, that's fine, at least it's happening now.

[18:01] And eventually it may even reach politicians,

[18:09] and media people.

[18:11] Eventually, even say,

[18:14] maybe destined to become conscious. (laughs)

[18:22] So, in the meantime

[18:24] I recommend that you don't, that you're very careful

[18:28] with linking into the collective at the present time,

[18:33] especially, be very careful when you connect

[18:36] with social media, mainstream media, whatever media it is,

[18:42] because there is, it, in many ways,

[18:45] it is toxic and very unconscious.

[18:50] So you wouldn't voluntarily expose yourself to a virus,

[18:56] that's quite dangerous.

[18:59] You wouldn't go out and say,

[19:00] "Okay, I will go

[19:01] to an environment where many people are infected

[19:07] with this virus, and hope for the best."

[19:09] I wouldn't do that.

[19:10] In the same way,

[19:12] be very careful when you link into those forms of media,

[19:19] because a lot of what's going on there,

[19:22] is a viral infection of the collective.

[19:27] So, yes, you a minimum to know what's going on.

[19:31] That's fine.

[19:32] You want to know what's going on.

[19:33] But beyond that, you do not need to listen

[19:37] for one, two, or three hours

[19:39] of five people on the screen talking

[19:44] to each other, how dreadful the situation is,

[19:48] and, because you absorb that,

[19:51] it's, don't expose yourself to unnecessary risks

[19:57] of catching collective mental viruses.

[20:04] Although, of course,

[20:05] the more present you are, the more immune, immunity you have

[20:11] but still you wouldn't even want to,

[20:14] even if you have the immunity, why expose yourself to that?

[20:20] It's more important that, if you contribute to,

[20:24] like discourse,

[20:25] through social media or whatever,

[20:28] if you use any of these things, whatever they're called;

[20:33] Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat,

[20:39] whatever, just make sure

[20:43] that everything you put out is conscious.

[20:47] It's not a reactive thing, not attacking anybody.

[20:52] Don't confuse the virus that,

[20:57] mental virus that people get infected by,

[21:00] with who they essentially are.

[21:02] So, whatever you put out, make sure it's something

[21:06] of a constructive nature that does not contribute

[21:10] to human unconsciousness,

[21:12] but diminishes human unconsciousness.

[21:19] So, it's a wonderfully challenging time we live in,

[21:25] but that's a good thing.

[21:37] So emotions, awareness, catch the emotion as it arises,

[21:50] especially if old emotion, pain body emotion,

[21:55] detect it and recognize it for what it is.

[22:00] That's, then you've already won half the battle,

[22:03] so to speak,

[22:04] Recognizing it for what it is, emotion,

[22:10] old emotion.

[22:12] Stay present as the observer, the witness.

[22:27] So, you are here to bring sanity into this world.

[22:34] That's a good life purpose, to bring consciousness,

[22:42] one could even define this

[22:44] as your main life purpose,

[22:45] to bring consciousness, into this world.

[22:48] The light of consciousness.

[22:50] You can be the light that, of course

[22:53] that reminds me of the famous saying,

[22:55] I don't know who first said it,

[22:58] it's attributed to various people,

[23:00] whether it was Nelson Mandela, or somebody else,

[23:04] "Be the change that you want to see in this world."

[23:08] So, that's very true.

[23:11] So be the light of consciousness,

[23:13] because that's the change that we need,

[23:17] that the world needs.

[23:18] (gentle music)

Emotions are energy entities that, when unrecognized, rise from the body into the mind and hijack your thinking. Each negative thought then amplifies the emotion, creating a vicious loop where the emotion generates more thoughts of the same frequency, which feed it further. This cycle continues until you are completely possessed by the emotional state.
The pain body is accumulated unprocessed negative emotions from the past, often originating in childhood. It lies dormant in your body but periodically awakens, causing disproportionate reactions to minor triggers. In relationships, when activated, it speaks through you to provoke similar emotions in your partner, creating dramatic cycles neither person consciously understands.
Your "life" is a narrative—a repetitive sequence of thoughts—not actual events. Negative emotions feed on thoughts that match their frequency. When you habitually think negatively about your life, you are actively feeding the emotional entity, creating an addiction to unhappiness that compels you to keep thinking the same thoughts.
Awareness creates an observing presence—a witness to the emotion rather than identification with it. When you become aware of an emotion, it loses its total possession over you. The emotion may still be present physically, but it cannot rise into your mind to generate more thoughts, breaking the feedback loop.
When your reaction to an event is disproportionate, it signals the pain body has been triggered. Instead of reacting, pause and observe the sensation in your body. Feel it fully without resistance, without thinking about it. Anchor yourself in the present moment—your breath, surroundings, physical sensations—where the past has no power and the pain body cannot operate.
Children should learn to recognize and observe their emotions rather than be run by them. Parents can ask questions like "What are you feeling? What color is it? What would you name it?" This transforms the emotion into an object of observation, helping children develop awareness that they are not identical to their emotions.
No. With awareness, the emotion remains in your body, but you are no longer possessed by it. The key is that because you are observing rather than resisting or thinking about it, the emotion does not rise into your mind to generate more thoughts. You feel it fully but without the mental amplification that keeps it alive.
